Open House with Solafrica

We continue our Open House series in 2016 with Solafrica, a Swiss NGO active in Africa, training local professionals and developing small-scale businesses on solar technology. Their goal? Assist rural areas in Africa to meet their growing energy demands, in a self-sufficient way and with lower carbon emissions. What are their results so far, after 6 years of activity in 3 different countries?

Summary

The Open House events are a meeting point for professionals and people with an interest in the fields of Sustainability, NGOs and Philanthropy. On each session, visitors can enjoy a short presentation by an organisation selected by SUSTINOVA and, during an informal Apéro, the opportunity to connect and discuss face-to-face the work of the organisation and other overarching issues. Founded in 2009 in Bern, Solafrica is an NGO tackling the energy challenge in Africa by promoting solar energy and energy efficiency through a mix of capacity-building, promotion of entrepreneurship and investment in a sustainable energy supply. Their approach:

1. Design and implement projects to meet Africa’s rapidly growing energy needs in a climate-friendly way.
2. Train local professionals and develop social enterprises, both of which are central to Africa’s energy needs.
3. Enable economically disadvantaged people through access to modern energy technologies.
4. Promote solar technology in Switzerland and secure additional funding streams, through CO₂ compensation options, the Solarvignette and hands-on workshops for young people.
